When most people think of premium olive oil, countries like Italy, Spain, and Greece often come to mind. But nestled in the heart of the Mediterranean lies a true hidden gem: Cyprus. With a rich history, unique climate, and generations of expertise, Cypriot olive oil offers a flavour and quality that rivals any of its more famous neighbours and counterparts.
Cyprus’s Olive Oil History
Olive oil production in Cyprus dates back thousands of years. Archaeological evidence shows that olive trees have thrived on the island since ancient times, with Cypriots using olive oil not only for cooking but also as a symbol of life, peace, health, and prosperity. Studies however continue into the 21s century to charter its genetic recourses, thanks to a number of ancient olive trees that still remain in the same orchards. The traditions however remain, passed down through generations of families who treat olive oil as more than a product—it’s a way of life.
What makes Cypriot Olive Oil unique?
Cyprus’s Mediterranean climate, with its long, sunny summers and mild winters, creates the perfect conditions for olive trees to flourish. The island’s mineral-rich soil adds complexity and depth to the flavour of the olives. Studies have so far been able to identify 3 native types of Cypriot variety (cultivar) of olives that were used before the introduction of olives from neighbouring countries which we will touch upon later in this piece.
- The Cypriot Olive
What we do know is that for centuries, olive oil has been harvested from 3 known Cypriot cultivars.

They are mountain olives that by nature are small to medium sized olives so they don’t typically yield as much olive oil as their counterparts in Greece such as the Koroneiki and Kalamata Olives.
The primary cultivar Ladoelia (Λαδοελιά) is highly resistant to drought and pests and characterised by a very good adaptation to the local agro-environmental conditions of Cyprus, often found in the more mountainous regions of the island and as a result offer a great resistance to water stress during periods of prolonged drought.
In terms of taste, they typically produce an olive oil that has a balance of fruity, almost earthly/herbal and peppery notes, making it incredibly versatile. The flavour is typically bold yet smooth, almost velvet like; perfect for cooking and drizzling over fresh salads, grilled vegetables, or even desserts.
- Introduction of Mixed Blend Olives
Mixed blends— where local varieties (cultivars) are combined with international ones have gained great popularity in recent times. Cypriot farmers began to introduce from the late 1970’s, a mixed blend of Koroneiki, Kalamon, and Arbequina olives among others. This shift was driven by the increasing need to match international market demands but also to offer a competitive market edge in the industry both in terms of scale of production and quality along with taste.
This has in turn improved oil yield per hectare, created more balanced, aromatic, and high-polyphenol olive oil, whilst adapting to climate change and drought resistance.
Coupled with the modernisation of olive oil production which is now embracing regenerative farming practices, advanced milling techniques and more efficient harvesting methods, then it is no coincidence that the highest recorded polyphenol count in extra virgin olive oil is currently found in Cyprus.
